Helichrysum Essential Oil Uses
Helichrysum essential oil is one of my favorite essential oils because of its fast acting, profound pain relieving and healing effects. The particular species of Helichrysum italicum, also known as Everlasting or Immortelle, is the most broadly therapeutic of the 500 Helichrysum species, and this is the species that you will find in our Helichrysum Essential Oil.
Studies have suggested that helichrysum essential oil can help promote healing, fight infection, and reduce inflammation, and the science suggests that helichrysum essential oil may be able to help:
Anti-Inflammatory
Helichrysum has anti-inflammatory properties, and is anti-spasmodic and regenerative all in the same oil. The anti-inflammatory effects can be attributed to the curcumenes present in the oil. Curcumenes are one of the working forces behind the anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric, and if you are a regular visitor, you know how much we love that!
When it comes to skin inflammation, treating skin inflammation has been one of helichrysum oil's specialties for many years, and the science has now backed that up.
Anti-Spasmodic / Muscle Relaxant
Another area that Helichrysum essential oil shines is in the area of relieving tight muscles. Helicrysum contains a natural chemical called ‘neryl acetate’ which acts to relax tight, cramped muscles.
Regenerative / Wound Healing
Helichrysum is regenerative in nature because of the ‘di–ketones‘ found almost exclusively in Helichrysum. The di-ketones signal body tissues to regenerate. In fact, you will find Helichrysum included in many formulas for wound healing and scar reduction.
These di-ketones, paired with the antimicrobial properties in helichrysum oil are what make it exceptional at encouraging wound healing. These two properties work well together in preventing infection while encouraging tissue regeneration.
Allergies
Helichrysum may be able to reduce allergy symptoms, particularly contact dermatitis (a rash caused by coming in contact with an allergen. Because allergy symptoms are often largely a result of inflammation, the anti-inflammatory properties of helichrysum may help reduce other allergy symptoms.
Colds and cough
Helichrysum essential oil contains antimicrobial properties that help fight colds and cough. The best way to treat colds and coughs with helichrysum oil is to use a diffuser. This will help get the inflammation out of the airways.
Digestive disorders
Studies have shown that helichrysum oil can help stop intestinal spasms, which can help reduce the symptoms of a wide range of digestive issues such as cramps, pain, and bloating, acid reflux, constipation, and indigestion.
Gallbladder disorders
Helichrysum has been used throughout Europe for the treatment of gallbladder disorders. There is also some evidence that shows Helichrysum essential oil as helpful in reducing gallbladder inflammation and the pain associated with it.
Candida
Candida is a type of fungus that can cause yeast infection, thrush, and other infections throughout the body. A 2018 study has shown that helichrysum essential oil, both diffused or applies topically, can stop or slow the growth of candida.
Final Thoughts
Safety: Helichrysum essential oil is one of the only oils indicated for topical application at 100% strength for acute conditions, and is therefore considered to be a very safe essential oil.
Mind-Body Connection: Helichrysum has an uplifting and emotionally-stabilizing effect.
Scent: Helichrysum oil needs time for the scent to evolve after it is first distilled. The change in aroma does not have an effect on the physical healing properties of the oil, but you may not find the aroma all that interesting until it has aged. Aged Helichrysum essential oil can have a deeply complex and pleasant aroma.
