Head lice are parasitic insects that live on the human head. Pediculus Humanus Capitus are tiny but can be seen by the human eye. They live among hair and draw blood from the scalp, and lay their eggs on hair shafts. Lice will take easily to either squeaky clean or dirty hair. One louse can multiply into hundreds of lice within 3 weeks. They spread by direct contact. To prevent having head lice, avoid sharing head gear, car seats, linens, barrettes, curlers, sleeping bags, combs, brushes, barrettes, curlers and clothing.

Checking for Head Lice

Watch for itching and scratching. Then check heads! Lice run from light, so it can be hard to see them. Lice, red bite marks or scratch marks can be seen on the scalp and neck. The nits are whitish (empty nits) or brownish (live nits). They are shaped like ovals the size of poppy seeds. You will find nits near the scalp all over the entire head especially behind the ears, the top of the head and the back of the neck. Nits are firmly cemented onto hair and will not wash out by shampooing. If they flake off, you are probably looking at dandruff.  In severe cases, a child may develop swollen glands in the neck or under the arms. Checking regularly for lice will make their elimination that much easier.

Treating Head Lice

Use Resolve Lice Treatment according to the directions on the bottle. Repeat treatment in 5 and then again in 10 days. As lice are highly contagious, checking and treating the entire family is strongly recommended. Vacuum carpets, couches, beds, pillows, chairs and car seats. Wash clothes and linens in very hot water (130°F). Lice can live on cloth surfaces such as plush animals, sofas, rugs, etc.  Additional contact with lice will cause re-infestation.

Head Lice Prevention

To prevent from getting head lice it is good to be cautious anytime of the year, but especially when school comes back in session after extended breaks. Spray hair lightly with Resolve Head Lice Prevention Spray and leave it on to work all day long.  Long hair should be pulled back during times of threat.  Remember, one louse can multiply into hundreds of lice within 3 weeks. They spread by direct contact. To prevent having head lice, avoid sharing head gear, car seats, linens, barrettes, curlers, sleeping bags, combs, brushes, barrettes, curlers and clothing.
