Essential Oil Sun Safety

Published by THT Steph on 15th Jun 2018

As we spend more time in the sun, it is good to know what phytotoxicity is and how to avoid the side effects. Most essential oil users incorporate essential oils into their daily lives, but did you know that there are essential oils that should not be used before going out in the sun?

Photosensitivity occurs when furocoumarins react when exposed to ultraviolet light, causing blistering and reddening and/or burning of the skin.

Photosensitivity is commonly caused by citrus oils, but is not limited to only citrus. The best way to avoid a problem is to not use photosensitive oils topically on the same day that you will be in exposed to direct sunlight. It is best to err on the side of caution and avoid direct sunlight/ UV rays for a 24 hour period after applying these essential oils to your skin.

You might have noticed that we suggest a low percentage dilution rate for a number of our oils that can cause photosensitivity. That is another thing that we are doing to help you and your family stay safe while enjoying essential oils.

About Our Products

Herbal Tinctures

We use organic herbs macerated in organic grain alcohol and filtered water. This combination acts as a carrier, bringing the remedy straight to the blood stream for maximum effectiveness. Tinctures are absorbed in the mouth and stomach and bypass the slower intestinal system, making sure you get the most our of every drop.

Loose Tea & Herbs

We grind our herbs and spices in small batches as neeed to retain freshness. Cut herbs and teas are then sealed in nonreactive, resealable bags on the same day that your order is filled. Our process protects the flavorful, healthful constituents of each herb, retaining medicinal quality while providing optimal flavor.

Essential Oils

Our essential oils are unsprayed-wildcrafted, or certified organic, and put through rigorous quality control measures. Every batch is tested by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) testing to ensure therapeutic quality and purity.  There are no synthetics, fragrances, fillers, or toxic chemicals in our essential oils, ever!

And God said, 'See, I have given you every herb that yields seed on the face of all the earth,
