My Favorite DIY Recipes for Cough Remedies
When a tickle in your throat threatens to turn into a full-blown cough, many of us reach for a bottle of cough syrup. But what if there was a way to use a soothing herbal remedy not just as a quick fix, but as a proactive ingredient when illness strikes? Many of these recipes can be used "as is", or you can choose to add either Respair Herbal Tincture or Aller-G Herbal Tincture.
1. The Fire & Honey DIY Cough Tincture Elixir
This is my favorite cough recipe, and it works a lot like fire cider, but without the plan ahead time. The Fire & Honey DIY Cough Elixer Recipe kick starts your day with a soothing drink that soothes your throat and gives your lungs a boost. It’s a simple yet effective way to pack in some herbal goodness.
Recipe:
1/2 cup Raw Honey: The ultimate throat coat and natural cough suppressant.
1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar: Helps thin mucus and balance pH.
2 Tbs Aller-G Tincture for Cough or Respair Tincture for Congestion: This blend doesn't just mask the cough; it thins mucus, relaxes the chest, and provides a physical protective barrier to help you breathe freely again.
1 tsp Ground Ginger: A powerful anti-inflammatory for lung irritation.
1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper: The "secret weapon." It increases circulation and helps desensitize the nerves in the throat that trigger coughing.
Optional: 1 clove of crushed garlic (if you're feeling brave and need an immune boost!).
Instructions:
- Whisk all ingredients together in a small jar until well combined.
- Let it sit for at least 30 minutes to infuse.
- Store this in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.
- Dosage: Take 1 tablespoon every few hours as needed. Shake well before each use!
Pro-Tip: Store this in the fridge for up to 4 weeks. The spice from the cayenne provides instant "extreme" relief by warming the chest and throat area.
Why it is my favorite DIY cough remedy on the list:
The Heat Factor: The cayenne pepper creates a warming sensation that distracts the nerves responsible for the "cough tickle."
The Mucus Buster: The high concentration of lemon and ginger works to chemically break down phlegm so you can actually clear it out.
The Coating: Raw honey acts like a natural bandage for the irritation caused by constant hacking.
2. The Soothing Morning Elixir
Kickstart your day with a soothing drink that soothes your throat and gives your lungs a boost. It’s a simple yet effective way to pack in some herbal goodness.
Recipe:
1 cup warm water or herbal tea (chamomile or peppermint work well)
1-2 squeezes of the dropper of Aller-G Tincture
1 teaspoon of honey (for extra soothing power)
A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Why it made our list: This recipe is super easy to make and uses ingredients you probably already have. The warm liquid helps loosen mucus, and the herbs in the tincture (like mullein and nettle) support inflammation and airways by soothing irritated mucous membranes. Honey and lemon are always good for a cough, and they pair perfectly with the herbal flavors of the tincture.
3. Chocolate Herbal Cough Syrup
When you want a ready made remedy that the whole family can't resist, because what child would refuse to take chocolate medicine?
Recipe:
1 T. cacao powder
1 C raw honey (use maple syrup for kids under 1 year of age)
fresh juice from half a small lemon
6 squeezes of the dropper (60 drops) of Respair Cough Tincture
Instruction:
Mix everything together in a small jar and store in the refridgerator for up to 6 weeks.
Why we love it: This DIY cough syrup is easy on a child’s taste buds, and the tincture adds an amazing layer of respiratory support.
4. Cozy Bedtime Tea
A dry, irritating cough can often disrupt a good night's sleep. This recipe is designed to be a calming, soothing ritual before bed.
Recipe:
1 cup of warm water
1 bag of herbal tea (something with ginger, chamomile, or sleep tea are excellent choices)
1-2 Squeezes of the dropper of Respair Herbal Tincture
Optional: A slice of fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick for extra warmth
Here’s why you should try this: The warm tea and herbs in this tincture can help relax your throat and calm your respiratory system. I’ve been using Sleep Herbal Tea for this recipe for awhile now, and it’s my favorite combo for getting some sleep when my cough is keeping me or my family awake.
5. The Quick & Easy Honey Syrup
For a no-fuss approach, you can create a simple herbal honey that can be taken by the spoonful or stirred into other beverages.
Recipe:
1/2 cup of local, raw honey
5-10 squeezes of the dropper of Elderberry Herbal Tincture
Directions: Mix the tincture directly into the honey in a small jar. Stir until fully combined. Store at room temperature. Take a small spoonful as needed throughout the day.
Why you’ll love this recipe: Honey is known for its natural cough-suppressing properties, and when combined with Elderberry Herbal Tincture, it creates a powerful, concentrated remedy that’s easy to take on the go and perfect for giving to kids. Just a heads up, though - honey’s not recommended for children under one year old.
By incorporating Herbal Tinctures into these simple recipes, you’ll get to experiment with herbal recipes that go beyond just treating a cough, and actively support your respiratory health. Think of it as a tasty way to take proactive care of your wellness, using nature’s incredible gifts to keep you and your family feeling your best.
